Indian Students Attacked in Melbourne, Who’s to Blame?

More than a hundred Indian students have been violently attacked this year in Melbourne, Australia. Most victims of these vicious attacks by Australian goons are poor students enrolled in private colleges with little knowledge of English language and even less idea about behaving in a Westernised, foreign country. They must earn money locally to support themselves, repay their debts, probably support their families in India and try to get PR (Permanent Residence) in Australia. The attacks geneerated a great deal of bad media coverage in India and the Australian government swung into action for damage control.

Many students go to Australia and work their bones off, typically for 18-20 hours a day for small Indian businessmen at slave labour rates, to pay back the loan sharks in India and have little money left for renting a room in a decent part of town. So they move to the cheapest and most dangerous parts of Melbourne and are forced to travel on the last train home at midnight which no local resident would even dare. As soft targets, they get abused racially and attacked by Aussie criminals and drug addicts. All this results in social isolation, depression, alcoholism and in many cases, prostitution for female students.

So how did they get to Australia in the first place? Some greedy Indians down under spotted an opportunity to make big money a few years ago as the numbers of Indian students rose from 11,000 to 97,000 while an acute shortage of unskilled labour existed due to a buoyant economy. Hardly any of these colleges have professional courses for accountancy, engineering, computer science or the sciences. No such college is registered with the University of Melbourne, Monash University or any other reputable university. The faculty is hardly creditworthy as many teach in Indian languages because they do not know enough and all students do not understand English!

How do these sub-standard colleges get government approval? Australia has a shortage of civil servants as one government employee has to perform the job of up to ten. So most of these approvals are on line as the applicant is supposed to be responsible for the accuracy of the information. If proved otherwise, the penalties are severe. The college owners rent a couple of rooms in an imposing buildings of central Melbourne and register a college on line for teaching hairdressing, Indian cookery, hotel management and so on. Renting an impressive hall, they bring in a white Australian lecturer and collect some white and Indian students to listen in. The college venue and the lectures in progress are photographed and uploaded on their website to lure unsuspecting students.

All these colleges have an aggerssive agent network in India. Their agents recruit students under false premises by showing them brochures and websites. They promise a highly paid part-time job to repay their loan and a recognised degree for PR in Australia. The agents assist these prospective students to commit fraud by getting some one else take the English language tests, required for obtaining an Australian visa, for Rs 150,000.

Once they arrive in Melbourne, they are shocked at their ‘colleges’. They find jobs as waiters, petrol station attendants, security guards, cleaners and violate immigration permission of 20 hours work per week. Since they hardly attend any classes held in rooms away from the city, they pay between A0 to A,000 to other students to work on their academic assignments. Most cookery colleges tie up with Indian restaurants that have mushroomed recently. These restaurants pay a pittance for their labour and allegedly charge colossal sums to issue false certificates of experience. After the recent incidents, about 60 ex-students were notified to prove genuineness of their certificates.

After these attacks, the Aussie authorities have swung into action. The police is more responsive to these attacks, charging the assailants and establishing a 24-hour helpline. The Aussie authorities have imposed stricter visa norms like an oral test and introduce orientation before leaving India. A crack down on private colleges closed some of them. Indian government will from now onwards register all students before they leave for studies abroad.

Thus the four entities – the Australia and the Indian governments, the sub-standard private colleges and the local Indians in Melbourne – have all made special efforts to stop these attacks with positive results.

Grey nurse sharks are strictly fish eaters and are totally harmless, but last century they were wrongly blamed for many shark attacks on people in Australia. See Whale Sharks in the Philippines

Donsol used to be a sleepy coastal town in Sorsogon-a province in the southernmost tip of Luzon. Nobody knows Donsol except for, of course, its local inhabitants until a few years ago when tourists from all over the world began to flock this remote place to get a look-see at the largest fish on earth: the whale shark.

Before, fishermen in Donsol were ignorant of the ecological (and tourist) value of whale sharks. They used to hunt, slaughter and sell the poor gentle sea creatures to Japanese traders. Local folks call them “butanding” or “big fish” in the vernacular. Early sightings of the butandings were reported in the Visayan seas in Bohol further south. It was said that massive slaughtering caused their migration to Donsol waters.

Although, according to stories, the first butanding that was netted out in the area was also butchered. A marine biologist witnessed it and instantly recognized the fish as a rare marine specie. The biologist immediately reported the incident to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), an international organization promoting the preservation of the wildlife.

WWF wasted no time and launched an education campaign about the giant creature. After coordinating with the Department of Tourism, whale-watching soon became a tourist activity that allowed extra income for the people of Donsol.

Whale sharks can grow up to 50 feet in length. It has a rather wide mouth with hundreds of pointed teeth. It usually comes in grey or greenish brown color with white or yellow spots all over its body.

It earned the label gentle giant of the sea because of its harmless nature, considering it is of the shark family. It has nothing in common with whales except for its size, thus the name. Divers can swim and interact with them and are only known to sink deeper into the ocean when it gets upset. There has been no known attack on humans of whale sharks.

Scientists are still baffled with the large migration of whale sharks in Donsol. These fishes are known to prefer the cold waters, not the tropical seas that we have. One explanation would be the flourishing of planktons in the area. Planktons are organisms that fill the diet of the whale sharks. It is also hard to record the number of whale sharks that now thrive in Donsol. But early studies show that whale sharks can travel 14,000 miles in 40 months and is capable of breeding in different sea environments.

Whale sharks swim on the surface of the water especially during the morning and early afternoon. It opens its mouth rhythmically when feeding on the planktons and visitors may be treated to this wondrous sight if they spot the fish at the perfect time. But don’t expect them to jump up and down the water like the whales or dolphins. That’s actually another beauty of the whale shark experience because this makes it perfectly east and safe to get near them.

Steve Wynn

The third serious player on the market of gambling entertainments in Las Vegas and Macao. Steve was born in 1942 in Connecticut. Unlike Kirk and Sheldon, Steve received very good education, according to American standards – he graduated from Pennsylvania university. Steve had to engage in private business straight after graduation. His father, the owner of the network of bingo clubs in the west of the U.S., died when Steve was still a student. The son continues his business. Steve’s career in “big” business starts in 1967. Having saved some money, he buys a small share of the casino-hotel “Frontier” in Las Vegas, where he moved for permanent residence together with his wife. Having no funds to build his own casino, Steve gets acquainted with the owners of the already existing casinos and offers them his services in renewal of their business. His first project was reconstruction of the casino «Golden Nugget». Steve transformed the absolutely ordinary casino into a luxurious institution, which immediately became a great success with the players. Having showed himself and earned a pretty penny, Steve decided to invest money into buying shares of other Vegas casinos, in order to reconstruct them as well. The following major project is renovation of the casino «The Mirage». According to Steve’s conception, it was to become the most outstanding, rich, elite casino of Las Vegas. He intends to found there a big park and an artificial volcano, and make the best rooms and hotel service in Vegas. Steve bets on luxury. Despite apprehensions of the partners (the project was very expensive), he managed to embody his ideas. «The Mirage» became and for a long period remained the most prestigious casino of Las Vegas, bringing huge profits to its owners.

After this project Steve’s name enters the history of the world capital of gambling. However, Steve does not rest on his laurels. Conversely, he becomes thoroughly engrossed in a new reckless venture. Developing his conception of a “luxurious casino”, he totally changes the casino-hotel «Bellagio»: an artificial lake, an internal greenhouse, an art gallery with canvases of great painters, expensive boutiques and restaurants. Enormous diligence, multiplied by talent, made Steve one of the richest people in Vegas, the owner of casinos. In 2000 he sells «The Mirage» to the company «MGM Grand», which after this purchase changes its name to «MGM Mirage».

Wynn spends most of his money on building a new institution, which opens in April 2005 on the site of «Desert Inn». The new brainchild of Steve is called «Wynn Las Vegas».

Apart from interests in Vegas, Steve invests funds into conquering the Asian market. In the short-term perspective it is planned to open the casino «Wynn Macau». Steve’s activity has brought him 2.1 billion dollars, which allowed him to occupy the 365th position in «Forbes» world rating.

Stanley Ho

The wealthiest representative of gambling industry in Asia who for more than 30 years was the single ruler of this industry in Macao. Stanley was born in 1921 in Hong Kong. His great-grandfather was a Dutch Jew who married a local woman. The Ho family was one of the most renowned and influential in Hong Kong. But Stanley was not able to make use of the wealth of this family. His father went bankrupt, when Stanley was a student. Due to financial break-down his two brothers committed a suicide, and his father renounced his family and left Stanley with two sisters and mother. Despite all hardships, he successfully graduated from Hong Kong university and mastered three languages. Stanley started his career in a trade company, located in Macao. Outstanding business skills and proficiency in several languages allow him to become a shareholder of the company at the age of 21. Ho received his first fortune as a result of a very unpleasant accident. Stanley was responsible for sea trade. During one of the voyages the ship with Stanley, who carried a great amount of money, aboard was subject to an armed attack. Stanley, practically on his own (many of his fellow employees were killed) stands against the gang and returns both the money and the ship. The company duly appreciated the courage of their employee and rewarded him a bonus of one million! In 1943 Ho invested his million into construction industry, his new company is located in Hong Kong. At this time the city undergoes a real construction boom, and Stanley receives very decent dividends from his business. But his ambitions are not limited to construction business, together with his partners he wins the tender for the monopolistic right to open gambling institutions in Macao. Stanley won the tender with the sum of only 410 thousand dollars. For many years Ho’s company becomes the monopolist of Macao gambling market. Stanley invests all his money and skills in this company. By 1972 he owns 9 casinos, including casino-hotel «Lisboa», one of the most beautiful casinos of the world.

In the 90-ies Ho extends beyond the borders of Macao and opens 9 casinos on the Philippines, however, as a result of a conflict with the president of this country, he had to renounce his Philippine business. Apart from the casino, Ho owns many betting operators and totalizators. In 2003 the budget of Macao by 30% consisted of revenues from the activities of the companies that belonged to Stanley. His business provides work to more than 10 thousand people. In 1998 Ho becomes one of the first living inhabitants of Macao, in whose honour the local street was named. But earlier or later everything comes to an end. Ho’s idyll ends in 2000, when Macao authorities decide to cancel monopoly for gambling industry. Since 2002 Ho has to share gambling industry with American “sharks” – Wynn and Adelson, who immediately used the chance to become familiar with Asian market. Presently Stanley Ho’s fortune is 6.5 billion dollars, he has the 84th position in the «Forbes» world rating.

Surfing With Sharks

Publicly exploitable vulnerabilities with Internet Explorer are far more common than many security people would like. The recently discovered VML arbitrary code execution flaw is probably one of the more serious issues to come to light in recent months. Based on a vulnerability in a core component of Internet Explorer, the vulnerability allows attackers to run code of their choice on victim’s systems, provided that they can be tricked into viewing malicious content.

This critical step in the process has unfortunately been made much easier in recent days. When exploitation of the issue was first discovered, it was primarily adult websites that were using it to install malware on the systems of visitors. Similar to how the WMF exploitation at the start of the year progressed, VML exploitation took a recent nasty turn. Hosting provider, HostGator, was compromised through what is believed to be a previously unknown cPanel vulnerability and client websites were being redirected to sites that exploited the VML vulnerability – thus infecting systems. In this case, site visitors could be visiting legitimate, trusted websites but end up on a page that is busy installing malicious content. Anecdotal evidence suggests that exploitation is much broader than is being reported by Microsoft and major security providers.

Although there have been a number of serious problems in cPanel over recent months, the most recent issue to be disclosed is a privilege escalation vulnerability that has been reported in the last couple of days. Assuming that this is the issue exploited to take control of HostGator’s servers, then this is something that a lot of hosting providers and site administrators need to be very aware of. The very popular site management tool normally installs into known locations, and it doesn’t take long to discover whether a site is using cPanel to manage it. To effectively use a privilege escalation exploit, it is necessary to gain access to a legitimate user account, so it would be prudent to ensure that all cPanel administrators and users are using strong passwords. Operators of sites on shared servers need to be aware that the compromise of an account belonging to another site can lead to damage of theirs. cPanel developers have since released an update to the issue, which affects all versions of the software.

Initial response to the VML issue suggested that disabling JavaScript support would be sufficient to protect against exploitation. As exploit samples progressed, it was noticed that this step was not enough – exploits were working even though scripting support had been disabled. Until Microsoft are able to release a patch (believed that is going to be made available with the October security patch release on October 10), the best advice for most users is to use an alternate browser. Advanced users can deregister the affected DLL, though this has a risk of causing further damage to a system if the user gets it wrong, and it prevents legitimate use of functions the DLL supports.

Users who are more adventurous might want to check out a patch released by the Zero Day Emergency Response Team (ZERT), the same group that provided an early patch for the WMF vulnerability from earlier this year. There is still great concern, as public exploit samples have recently been released that provide a means to attack Windows XP SP2 systems, where previous samples have only been available for Windows XP SP1.

 Bangkok’s latest temple to the shopping god, Siam Ocean World (in the basement of Siam Paragon), is your chance to get thrown into the deep end and gawk at ragged-toothed sharks while your other half eyeballs Gucci shoes. The dive takes place in a three million-litre tank in the Deep Ocean exhibit – the aquarium’s fiberglass rocks were artist-designed but all the marine life, from the algae to the three-metre sharks, are real.

Films such as Jaws have fostered the modern collective fear of sharks, so turning, for most people at least, the idea of diving into a shark aquarium into an unthinkably dangerous concept.

Sounds scary? Don’t be chicken. “The most dangerous thing that could happen is bumping into a rock, which is why we’ve got you all padded up,” says Robin Lloyd, one of the friendly fellows from Planet Scuba who leads the dives. Everyone is provided with all the necessary equipment, including a full-body wetsuit with hood, gloves and boots. Divers without certification must do a morning training session in a nearby pool before taking the plunge and certified divers who have not dived in the previous 12 months must take a refresher course. In an open water dive in the ocean there’s no guarantee that you will see any of these amazing creatures, so it’s a great opportunity to view unforgettable marine life whichever way you turn. Like a gift basket, this floral feast has been carefully packaged by human hands for maximum enjoyment.

Shark species in the tank include leopard, tawny nurse, bamboo and African-imported ragged-tooth sharks. There’s no need to wet your wetsuit because none of these sharks will attack people unless seriously provoked. Once in the water, however, there is no guarantee that that knowledge will necessarily insulate you from the primal fear of big, pointy teeth. Dive packages range in price from 5,300 to 6,600 Baht, depending on your level of scuba- diving experience. Friends and family receive discounted tickets to Bangkok’s premier aquarium, Siam Ocean World, if they watch you dive.

Living with Panic Attacks – What You Need to Know

Living with panic attacks or someone who has them can be a challenge. However, when you are armed with the right knowledge, panic attacks don’t need to ruin your life or negatively affect the ones you love.

First and foremost, get help. Whether it’s from a doctor, psychiatrist, support group, family or friends, you do not have to do this alone. When seeking help from a professional be open and honest about your symptoms and the thoughts that race through your mind during an attack. When approaching family or friends for support let them know this is a sensitive subject and that you would like their help.

Recognize symptoms and triggers. You need to identify what may be causing your panic attacks, not so you can avoid them, but so you can be better prepared to handle them. Sometimes just knowing it is a panic attack and not a medical emergency can help to ease your mind.

Keep track. It will be easier to identify the triggers and responses if you write them down. How were you feeling prior to the attack? Was there apprehension before you were even in the situation? How did you react? What were the symptoms? What ultimately happened? Did you get through it, or did you try to get away as soon as you could? Not only is keeping track a useful exercise for you, it’s also helpful information for your treatment professional.

Avoid avoidance. It is natural to want to stay away from the things that could cause us harm. You wouldn’t go swimming in a pool full of sharks, for example. But with panic attacks the danger is not real. It feels real and the body reacts in a way that is real, but if you start avoiding the places and situations that you think will bring about a panic attack it will only make things worse. On top of that there is the possibility of developing agoraphobia and becoming completely housebound.

Take small steps in the right direction. Focus on the moment, not so much your reaction to it. If you know someone who has panic attacks, then be understanding and help them to go into the frightening situations. Do not ridicule them, and be gentle if they start to have an attack. You can always try again at a different time. It is very important that they trust you completely.

Regain control. Learn how to recognize the symptoms of your panic attack. Identify the signs as a sort of false alarm and focus on getting your breathing under control. If you are with somebody having a panic attack, try to reassure them. If you happen to know their breathing exercises you can do them with the sufferer (this will help reduce embarrassment and get them back in control).

Panic disorder does not have to sentence you to a sheltered and limited life. Help is available from many different sources; you just have to seek it out. Understand that this is a very real problem that deserves to be taken seriously.
